My research is driven by one fundamental question:
How do people and relationships remain resilient in the face of challenge?
My research programme examines resilience across three interconnected domains: Resilient Individuals, Resilient Families and Resilient Teams. Across these domains, I integrate relational neuroscience, behavioural science and technology to understand how people regulate, relate and adapt—and translate these insights into practical solutions that strengthen resilience.
Resilient Individuals
How do people regulate stress and build resilience?
Stress is an inevitable part of life, but people differ considerably in how they respond to it. My research examines the behavioural and neural processes that enable individuals to regulate stress, cope with challenge and maintain adaptive functioning.
Rather than treating resilience as a fixed personal trait, I examine how it develops dynamically through everyday experiences: how people appraise challenges, select coping strategies, regulate their emotional responses, and adapt their behaviour over time.
This work combines neuroscience, behavioural measurement and digital technologies to identify patterns of coping and regulation that can inform personalised approaches to strengthening resilience and wellbeing.

How do close relationships remain resilient under stress?
Resilience does not reside only within individuals. Stress unfolds within relationships: parents and children influence one another’s emotions, couples navigate adversity together, and families can amplify or buffer the effects of challenging experiences.
My research examines relational resilience—the capacity of close relationships to maintain, adapt and restore effective functioning in the face of stress, disruption and changing demands.
Using relational neuroscience and behavioural approaches, I investigate how parents and children, couples and caregivers regulate one another, coordinate during interaction and reconnect following moments of stress or disruption. This work examines how processes such as stress, attachment, caregiving, communication and interpersonal synchrony shape the resilience of relationships over time.
The long-term goal is to translate this science into interventions and technologies that strengthen relationships, support caregivers and build resilience across generations.

How do teams remain effective under challenge and change?
Many of today’s most complex problems require people to think, learn and work together. Yet effective teamwork requires more than bringing capable individuals together. Teams must coordinate attention, communicate effectively, navigate disagreement, build shared understanding and adapt their interactions as demands change.
My research examines the behavioural and neural processes that enable people to coordinate, adapt and perform together, across educational and professional environments.
Drawing on relational neuroscience, behavioural science and artificial intelligence, I investigate how communication, interpersonal coordination and shared neural dynamics relate to collaborative learning, problem solving and team performance. Increasingly, this work also examines how AI can become part of the collaborative system—supporting rather than disrupting effective human interaction.
The goal is not only to understand successful collaboration, but to translate these insights into technologies and interaction designs that help teams work better together.
